Student Spotlight: Melody DiBenedetto

Melody DiBenedetto

Where are you from?

I am from Bernardsville, New Jersey.

What motivates you to become a doctor?

I’ve had family experiences that have exposed me to the toll that illness takes on the body and mind, and I see medicine as an incredible source of hope to reduce the suffering that exists in the world. I am particularly drawn to academic medicine, where I can integrate both clinical practice and research to treat my own patients while also contributing to the broader body of knowledge to improve care for many others.

What are you looking forward to the most at Pitt Medicine?

I am especially excited to join the welcoming and close-knit community at Pitt Medicine. In these first couple of weeks, I’ve found that everywhere I turn, I am surrounded by faculty and staff who are eager to get to know me and offer guidance. In addition, we have many opportunities for small-group learning embedded throughout the curriculum, which will be a wonderful way to get to know my classmates and exchange perspectives through meaningful discussion.

Do you have any areas of interest? What are your career aspirations?

While I am not yet sure which specialty I would like to pursue, I know that I enjoy working with children and their families. I feel very lucky to attend a medical school that is affiliated with such an exceptional children’s hospital at UPMC. We also have so many pediatric physicians on the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine faculty, which is incredibly valuable for finding mentors as I look forward to engaging in research and exploring possible career paths.

Tell me some fun facts!

In my free time, I love to cook and practice yoga. I also love being outdoors and look forward to exploring the many parks Pittsburgh has to offer!
