Our dear friend and distinguished alum, Dr. Ross Musgrave, MED ’43, has passed. Dr. Musgrave led the Medical Alumni Association from 1991 to 2003. Please see the message and funeral arrangements from J. Peter Rubin, MD below. Our sympathies are with the Musgrave family.
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Ross H. Musgrave, MD. Dr. Musgrave was a pioneer of the University of Pittsburgh plastic surgery program, graduating as the second resident and then joining the faculty. He was a respected mentor, teacher, colleague, friend, and leader, touching the lives of countless people over his long career. His service to the University, Pitt Plastic Surgery, and the plastic surgery community was extraordinary. He was a University Trustee and Executive Director of the Pitt Medical Alumni organization. His national leadership positions included Governor of the American College of Surgeons, President of the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Among his numerous honors, Dr. Musgrave was the recipient of the University Distinguished Alumni Award, the Pitt Bicentennial Medallion of Distinction, and the School of Medicine Donald Fraley Mentoring Award.
Dr. Musgrave enjoyed art, theater, and sports. His intricately designed fabric collages were a coveted gift for the annual Musgrave lecturer. As a talented thespian, his stage performances captured the essence of characters such as Ben Franklin. He and his wife, Norma Jane, were married for nearly seven decades.
Dr. Musgrave’s tremendous contributions to his community and specialty are celebrated each year with the Musgrave Lectureship, next scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Additionally, his legacy of teaching and academic service continues through the Ross H. Musgrave Chair in Pediatric Plastic Surgery. Dr. Joseph Losee, a dynamic leader in our specialty, carries on Dr. Musgrave’s tradition of academic excellence as the inaugural Musgrave Chair. Please see the attached biography prepared by Dr. Losee with further details about Dr. Musgrave’s remarkable life.
